Springfield— Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) Interim Director John Kim has asked the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to proceed with an enforcement action and seek immediate injunctive relief related to a discharge of swine manure into Beaver Creek and Hooper Branch in late July that resulted in a large fish kill in the streams. The parties named in the referral are Hopkins Ridge Farms, LLC, which has more than 2,500 hogs; Belstra Milling Company of DeMotte, Indiana, which constructed and supports Hopkins Ridge Farms; Livestock Engineering Solutions, Inc., the consulting engineering firm for Belstra Milling; and Lebert Mercier, the owner of the land application area that received a mixture of liquid swine manure from Hopkins Ridge for irrigation spraying that occurred between July 20 and July 23 and is the possible cause of the extensive fish kill.

Springfield, IL – The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) announced today that temporary air strippers to remove vinyl chloride contamination are currently being installed at the Sauk Village water treatment plant. Once installed, these will provide immediate relief to the residents of Sauk Village, while the village works to develop its long-term resolution.

WHAT: In order to give Sauk Village residents an opportunity to hear the facts and discuss concerns about elevated levels of vinyl chloride in their drinking water, the Illinois EPA and the Illinois Department of Public Health are hosting a Public Availability Session. WHEN: Wednesday, July 25, 2012 7 :00 pm – 9:00 pm WHERE: Bloom Trail High School Auditorium, Bloom Township District 206 22331 Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago Heights (Enter on Cottage Grove by the flag pole) WHO: Managers and staff from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Department of Public Health Background: Upon confirmation that the Village’s drinking water wells have concentrations of vinyl chloride in excess of Illinois’ prevention level of 1 part per billion (ppb) in the finished, or distributed water, the Illinois EPA required Sauk Village to notify all consumers of its public water supply. The federal drinking water standard (MCL or maximum contaminant level) is 2 parts per billion. Since 2009, the Illinois EPA has been closely monitoring the levels of vinyl chloride in the water supply, noting that it has been trending upward.

Springfield, IL – The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) has notified the Sauk Village public drinking water supply that there has been a confirmed detection of groundwater contamination that poses a threat of exposure to the public and is above the Illinois maximum contaminant level (MCL) prevention standard. Sauk Village also provides finished drinking water to Candlelight Village Mobile Home Park and Weatherstone Lakes Mobile Home Park, which are secondary users. Vinyl chloride (VC) has been detected and confirmed in finished (distributed) water at 1.68 parts per billion (ppb).

Springfield— The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) has granted the Exelon Dresden Nuclear Power Station a provisional variance from the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit thermal limits, due to recent extremely warm weather conditions and high demand for electricity . Dresden is a nuclear-fueled steam electric generating facility located on the Illinois River near Morris in Grundy County.
