Security video shows the moment when Chicago police say someone opened fire on two teens Monday morning, killing one and injuring the other, just steps away from a Chicago Public Schools charter school.

Chicago police say the shooting happened about 9 a.m. near Division and Lamon on the West Side–not far from Youth Connection Charter School.

“A shooting that stemmed from a verbal argument the shooting appears to be amongst individuals that know each other,” said First Deputy Supt. Kevin Navarro of the Chicago police.

A security camera from a bakery across the street captured the moments leading up to the shooting, as a group of what appears to be teens crosses the street.

“I’m very sad and I am even more sadder for the kids,” said 37th Ward Ald. Emma Mitts.

She said the teens had gotten into some sort of argument.

“One young man tried to break it up because he was intending to shoot the 18-year-old that got killed,” Mitts said.

Chicago police say a 17-year-old also suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and on the security video you can see him limp towards the Youth Connection Charter School, where Mitts says everyone involved had been students including the accused shooter.

Mitts says the students who attend the alternative school are drop-outs who are trying to turn their lives around. She hopes this shooting will not stop that from happening.

“I think they were trying to do the right thing by going here, (it’s a) tragedy to have to have lost a life,” she said.
