25 Chicago Restaurants Receive Coveted Michelin Stars

Restaurants across Chicago received coveted stars in the highly-acclaimed 2018 Michelin Guide on Friday.

Famed Lincoln Park restaurant Alinea, helmed by chef Grant Achatz, along with Randolph Street mainstay Grace, led by chef Curtis Duffy, both once again received three stars, the highest recognition awarded by Michelin.

In all, 25 restaurants were honored with stars. New to this year’s two-star category is husband-and-wife-owned West Loop eatery Smyth.

“Chefs John and Karen Shields have remarkable resumes at the best restaurants across the country. But what they have built in their own kitchen is even more remarkable,” said Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guide, in a statement. “Anchored by quality produce from The Farm, dining at Smyth is a naturally delicious and beautiful experience.”

Four restaurants in total received two stars — Acadia, Oriole, Sixteen and Smyth — and 19 were awarded one stars.

“Sixteen, located in River North, retains its two-star distinction after a change in the kitchen,” the guide notes. “The new Chef Nick Dostal has taken the menu in a new direction with influences of France, Italy and Asia.”

The one-star category included newcomers Elske and Entente.

Ellis notes the husband-wife duo behind Elske “have created a unique and striking experience in the West Loop, mixing Scandinavian and contemporary American influences.”

As for Entente, he praises chef Brian Fisher, pastry chef Mari Katsumura and owner Ty Fujimura for “a creative yet classic menu that changes based on inspiration and input from the team.”
