AARP fighting to repeal law that reduces unemployment benefits to Social Security recipients
In a tough economy, with the jobless rate in Illinois still hovering around 11 percent, many Illinoisans suffer with denied or reduced unemployment benefits simply because of their age.
Social Security recipients in Illinois are denied their full unemployment benefit simply because they receive Social Security – and AARP is fighting to repeal the discriminatory law that allows this to happen.
“Many older adults in Illinois are struggling to pay for basic necessities – and are working because they have to,” said Bob Gallo, AARP Illinois Senior State Director.
“To penalize these workers after they become unemployed simply because of their age is unfair and clearly wrong.”
Illinois is one of only three states in the nation that continues to penalize jobless older adults who receive Social Security in the form of reduced unemployment benefits. Since 2002, 19 states have repealed this law.
Legislation was introduced in 2009 (House Bill 293) that would have repealed the unemployment insurance law that classifies one-half of an older adult’s Social Security payment as disqualifying income.
The bill is expected to be reintroduced in 2010 and AARP will be fighting to ensure its passage.
“Employers pay unemployment taxes for all of their workers, regardless of age,” added Gallo.
“All workers should receive their full unemployment benefit regardless of age as well.”
