A controversial measure to provide more affordable housing got shelved again in Chicago City Council on Wednesday. The Sweet Home Chicago ordinance calls for 20 percent of tax increment financing dollars, or TIFs, to go toward affordable housing.
Alderman Walter Burnett planned to use a parliamentary trick to pass the ordinance; but he said a compromise is being worked on.
The coalition heard some of the points, which I said incorporated most of the things they were concerned about, and they figured it’s worth compromising on,” Burnett said.
Alderman Helen Shiller said one of the problems with the current ordinance is that housing can’t be built in every TIF district. Council members say the ordinance will be worked on in committee and brought to a vote later this month.
