PLAINFIELD, Ind. (AP) – The Associated Press declared Secretary of State Todd Rokita as the winner in the state’s 4th District race.
Rokita’s win keeps the state’s 4th District in the Republican column. He replaces retiring Rep. Steve Buyer.
Rokita easily won in the heavily Republican district despite a low-key campaign since winning the GOP primary in May. Rokita twice won statewide races for secretary of state but was prevented from seeking re-election this year because of term limits.
Buyer announced in January that he would retire after 18 years in Congress because his wife has been diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease.
Rokita defeated Democrat David Sanders, a Purdue University biology professor who twice lost to Buyer.
