Chicago — The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning as “oppressive” heat and humidity continues to create uncomfortable conditions for Chicago area residents.
Afternoon temperatures will be in the lower 90s with the heat index values reaching at or above 100 degrees both Thursday and Friday, the weather service said.
Night temperatures, however, will provide some relief with temperatures in the mid 70s.
The excessive heat warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday.
The weather service warns that the likelihood of heat-related illnesses will increase every day due to the cumulative effects of the heat and humidity.
The heat is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly and those with medical conditions.
An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur, the weather service said. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely.
