Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the state is aggressively pursuing gas station owners who are under-reporting sales.
Madigan today announced indictments against the operators of eight Illinois gas stations for allegedly skimping on paying sales taxes.
Madigan says this is just the first wave of indictments in an on-going investigation.
MADIGAN: If you defraud the people of Illinois by not paying sales taxes, we will aggressively prosecute you. In these very challenging economic times, our offices–those of the Attorney General and the Illinois Department of Revenue–are committed to holding gas station owners accountable.
The state investigation began with an anonymous tip in 2008.
Madigan says the state has recovered nearly $13 million in unpaid gasoline sales taxes since the beginning of the investigation.
None of the gas station owners could be immediately reached for comment.

I really get sick of these Attorney Generals always making their big threats, as if their own lives are so perfect. I’m sure someone could dig up dirt on here if they tried.
