Aurora named a top 100 city in Reader’s Digest

A Reader’s Digest RV roared into Aurora yesterday, along with a $1,000 check made out to the city. The city of 200,000 west of Chicago was selected as one of the 100 best-loved towns in America in the magazine’s “We Hear You America” contest.

Reader’s Digest ambassador Mike Amos and his team presented the check to Mayor Tom Weisner at the Prisco Community Center. Weisner credited the vibrant downtown architecture, Paramount Theatre, and Fox River as Aurora’s big draws, but commended the residents as what really makes the community special.

“Our people are easily our strongest resource,” Weisner said. “We continue to grow because people recognize what a great place this is.”

Chuck Nelson, an assistant to the mayor, described how valuable the exposure is for the city.

“Getting the money is nice, but just getting the publicity will help promote the city and create awareness of what a great town this is,” Nelson said. “The fact that Reader’s Digest is recognizing the city is a great testimonial.”

Aurora is now eligible to be selected as one of the top 10 towns with the most community spirit, says Amos. The honor would give Aurora a chance to win up to $40,000.

Today, Amos and his team are visiting Fairbury in central Illinois, which placed second in the selection of top 10 towns.
