Buckingham Fountain tightens valves

Storm, drop in temperatures forces shutdown

Originally planned for Sunday, Oct. 31, the shutdown of the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain, Columbus Drive and Congress Parkway, for the 2010 season was forced to happen earlier due to Tuesday and Wednesday’s inclement weather conditions, followed by today’s drop in temperatures.

To prevent the aging pipes from potentially freezing, shutdown began today to protect the iconic fountain.

About Chicago’s Buckingham Fountain

As Chicago’s most recognizable fountain, Buckingham Memorial Fountain is considered one of the largest and most beautiful in the world.

A gift to the people of Chicago from Miss Kate Buckingham, a memorial to her brother Clarence, the fountain is often considered the most identifiable landmark in the city.

Dedicated on August 26, 1927, the fountain was built at a cost of $750,000 and has since become a favorite backdrop for tourist snap shots, wedding photographers and filmmakers.
