The Chicago Council on Global Affairs is pleased to announce its 2009-2011 class of Emerging Leaders – 22 outstanding men and women who will help Chicago compete and thrive in the global era. They reflect the city’s diversity and include leaders from the government, private and nonprofit sectors.
“These Emerging Leaders are global citizens in every sense, hailing from Chicago but with gazes that span far beyond,” said Marshall M. Bouton, president of The Chicago Council on Global Affairs. “The city’s future depends greatly on their abilities to serve as knowledgeable agents of change.”
Chicago’s 8th place ranking as one of the top-ten global cities in a 2008 Global Cities Index released by A.T. Kearney, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Foreign Policy magazine is mainly driven by strong ranking in the categories of human capital and business activity. A new generation is now rising to leadership in the city, and The Chicago Council, with the support of the McCormick Foundation, established the Emerging Leaders program to identify these individuals and deepen their engagement in and understanding of global affairs.
Each year, an independent selection committee identifies a new class of leaders, from a competitive pool of nominated candidates, to participate in the two-year program. During the first year, The Chicago Council’s Emerging Leaders meet as a group in a series of seminars to examine timely issues such as the global economy, foreign policy, the environment and climate change, energy and migration. In the second year, they develop, produce and present a report on a pressing global challenge that affects Chicago and the Midwest.
The program was launched last year, and the 2008-2010 class of Emerging Leaders is now selecting their project focus. Their final report will be presented to The Chicago Council’s board of directors in the spring of 2010 and then released publically.
