Chicago Office of Tourism to Host “Tweet Up” Featuring Social Media Managers from Top US Tourist Destinations

Cities Represented include Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Seattle

Social Media Managers from several of the nation’s most visited cities will be coming together in Chicago for the first-ever destination marketing organization (DMO) “tweet-up.”

Scheduled for Friday, September 11, the tweet-up will include participants from Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Seattle. The tweet-up will take the format of a series of round-table discussion on topics relevant to leisure travel marketers including best practices for Facebook and Twitter; determining return on investment for social media; audience engagement; and working with hospitality and cultural partners.

The Chicago Office of Tourism (@ExploreChicago), which is hosting the tweet-up, maintains an active presence on social media sites and was recently named #1 in buzz (defined as “organic, user-generated interest and activity in social media”) in a study conducted by Mojave Interactive. The same study also awarded Chicago high marks for user sentiment, audience captivation and content quality.

Chicago’s social media program includes a number of innovative tactics. The city’s visitor services representatives provide online Twitter concierge service during all visitor center hours, quickly answering questions and communicating information about free events and activities in the city. The service was first introduced during the 2009 BlogHer conference, held in Chicago from July 23-26, 2009.

The Chicago Office of Tourism’s official Web site, explorechicago.org, also hosts a multimedia gallery featuring downloadable audio tours; a custom Chicago YouTube channel; and “Life by the Lake,” a series of Flickr photo journals that features images captured by Chicago-based photographers as they explore the city.

The Chicago Office of Tourism, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, is the official City agency dedicated to promoting Chicago to domestic and international visitors and to providing innovative visitor programs and services. For more information, please visit explorechicago.org.

The Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park is the Official Hotel of the DMO tweet-up.
