Chicago Police Marine Unit Rescues Dog

Steve Miller Reporting
CHICAGO (WBBM)
– The Chicago Police Marine Unit has rescued a dog on the Chicago River this afternoon.

Police say they got a call about a dog in the river at Armitage just before 4 p.m.

Police Officer Mark Jaeger says the marine unit went into action.

“When we arrived, the dog went under. It had lost its function and had gone under, came back up, went under a second time, and as it came up to the surface, we had two divers ready who were able to grab the dog before it went under for its last time and brought it safely back onto the police boat.”

Officer Jaeger says the dog – a female named Elle – slowly came back to life.

“It coughed up a little fluid and began breathing, shivered tremendously, sat underneath the pilot seat while I was driving the boat, and we brought it back to the boathouse where we just reunited it with its owner, who has only owned the dog four days and feels blessed to have his dog back.”

Officer Jaeger says it’s not clear – even to the owner – how Elle got into the Chicago River.

Jaeger says the owner had last seen Elle at the lakefront and Fullerton earlier today.

Jaeger says it looks like Elle is half-German shepherd, half yellow lab, and is about three years old. “A beautiful dog,” Jaeger says.
