A baseball game between Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep and Walter Payton College Prep high schools was canceled Saturday night when parents from the North Side school raised concerns about their children’s safety in playing a game at the South Side school.

The game was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep in Roseland, but parents from Walter Payton College Prep expressed concerns about their children’s safety leaving the field late Saturday night and asked their coach to cancel the game. Others refused to let their children play in the game.

Herbert Redmond, a coach for Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, said he felt the move was racially motivated.

“It’s really absurd,” he said. “It paints that picture that, OK, our kids are not good enough for you to come to play baseball with us.”

Redmond said the campus is safe, despite dangers throughout the entire city and his players were hurt by the opposing team’s decision.

The coach from Walter Payton College Prep, William Wittleder, apologized to the coaches and players for having to cancel the game.

Wittleder said the decision was “heartbreaking” and against what he believes in, but Brooks’ coach Bryan Street reportedly said Sunday he will never agree to a game with the school again, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep continued with their season Sunday and played a home game against Jones College Prep.
