CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois primary is going back to March and Cook County’s election chief is applauding the move.
Cook County Clerk David Orr says moving the primary from February to the third Tuesday in March will make voting easier. He says the weather is likely to be better and it will give voters more time to learn about candidates.
March primaries resume in 2012.
March is when Illinois primaries typically were held. But Democrats in the Legislature moved it up to February in 2008 to help President Barack Obama in his election bid.
This year’s Feb. 2 primary was just weeks after the holidays when few people are paying attention to politics.
