Chicago – Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman visited a South Side elementary school Friday to check for himself how year-round students are handling the heat.
His visit seemed to be a response to a call from the Chicago Teachers Union for a so-called “snow day” for heat.
The city was under an excessive heat warning until 7 p.m. Friday. The heat index was expected to be over 100 degrees.
Many of Chicago’s year-round schools have no air conditioning, and teachers say that’s not safe or conducive to learning.
CPS leaders say school will go on for now air conditioning or not.
