CTA: We Can Handle Bus Crash Investigation

The Chicago Transit Authority says there’s no need for an outside investigator to look into a bus accident that injured dozens of passengers this weekend.

The union that represents many transit employees says the agency shouldn’t investigate itself. But CTA spokeswoman Noelle Gaffney disagrees.

GAFFNEY: We already have a very skilled, experienced staff that knows how to conduct a very thorough, fair and fact-based investigation. We’re not sure why it would be necessary to involve a third party.

Gaffney says the CTA won’t speculate on why a bus veered off Lake Shore Drive and crashed into trees Saturday evening. She says the driver is cooperating with an internal investigation and submitted to a mandatory drug and alcohol test. The driver has been removed from service during the investigation.

The Amalgamated Transit Union is also calling for better maintenance of CTA vehicles.
