The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a mild left oblique strain, retroactive to July 7. To replace Soto on the roster, the Cubs recalled outfielder Sam Fuld from Triple-A Iowa.
Fuld, who was just optioned to Iowa from Chicago last Monday, has batted .364 (4-for-11) with three runs, two doubles and two walks in six games for the Cubs this season. He has spent most of the season in Iowa, where he has posted a .286 (83-for-290) average with 16 doubles, eight triples, 27 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 75 contests, including a .398 (33-for-83) batting average in June.
With Iowa this season, Fuld has walked 33 times compared to just 22 strikeouts in 327 plate appearances, and has a .300 batting average (21-for-70) with runners in scoring position.
A left-handed batter and fielder, Fuld, 27, made his major league debut with the Cubs in 2007, appearing in 14 games as a September call-up. The left-handed batter and thrower was originally selected by the Cubs in the 10th round of the 2004 Draft out of Stanford.
Named the Arizona Fall League MVP in 2007, Fuld split 2008 between Triple-A Iowa and Double-A Tennessee, combining to hit .264 (106-for-402) with a career-high 52 RBI.
Soto, 26, is batting .230 (50-for-217) with eight home runs and 27 RBI in 69 games this season.
