Daley Calls for Michigan to Investigate Oil Spill

Chicago’s mayor is calling on Michigan to launch a criminal investigation into an oil spill in the southern part of the state.

A burst pipeline may have leaked more thanĀ one million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River.

Daley says he’s worried the oil will make its way into Lake Michigan.

DALEY: The Great Lakes is a sources of drinking water for all of us here in the Midwest and Canada. It is very important to protect.

Daley urged Michigan’s governor and attorney general to investigate the cause of the spill, which came from a pipeline owned by a Canadian company called Enbridge, Inc.

This isn’t the first showdown between Michigan and Illinois over the Lake. Michigan recently sued to close Illinois waterways to prevent the spread of the invasive Asian Carp.

When asked if that’s what stoked his outrage, Daley was adamant.

DALEY: Oil is worse than carp! Oil basically destroys your drinking water. … Go down to the Gulf and they’ll find out what’s happening to the oil spill.

Federal and oil company officials are working to stop the Michigan slick before it reaches the Lake.
