Daley Considers Privatization to Close Budget Gap

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is unveiling cost cutting plans to help close a nearly $655 million budget deficit. But details remain unclear.

Mayor Richard Daley says the city’s looking into privatizing city services including animal control, fleet management and even lakefront music festivals. The city could also outsource the blue cart recycling program which Daley hopes will cut costs while expanding recycling in the city.

Daley says he’s considering using a portion of the city’s tax increment financing funds to help balance the budget. But he couldn’t say how big of a portion the city is looking at or how it would be distributed.

DALEY: These are proposals, only proposals. In other words, you put the idea out on Twitter and you’ll find out how many people respond to it. That’s how RFPs are. These aren’t complicated RFPs. They’re just requests for information.

The mayor says he will ask non-union employees to take furlough days as they did this year. That’s a request that will likely extend to the unions.

Daley isn’t ruling out the possibility of further service cuts.

If Hawking says there is no god, that is good enough for me! The maths are intimidating, however as in contrast with the “reasoning” that says “there should be a creator for all this to exist” it is actually so much less complicated, and therefore more probable, to reply “no, simply gravity”. I’m not going to stump up money to pierce Murdoch’s damned paywall though. Guess I’ll have to buy Hawking’s guide instead.
