INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Some Democrats in the Indiana House of Representatives are questioning the sincerity of new House Speaker Brian Bosma. It starts with Bosma’s call for bi-partisan cooperation. When the Republican speaker appointed two Democrats as committee chairmen, former House Speaker Pat Bauer saw it as an attempt to undermine his leadership.
Now House Minority Leader Bauer says he was taken by surprise on the appointments and he still doesn’t know if they reduce the number of appointments he gets to make.
Bauer also finds the selection of Rep. Chet Dobis (D-Merrillville) for one of those positions curious. Dobis lost a position in Democratic leadership last year when he voted against Bauer’s wishes. A committee chairmanship for Dobis now could be viewed as a poke in the eye for Bauer.
“That wouldn’t be a bad characterization,” says Bauer, “but that would be saying he did a little play acting.”
If Speaker Bosma is trying to split the Democrats, he didn’t let on as he spelled out his top priority saying, “And that is to take every possible effort to restore civility, bi-partisanship and respect to this institution for each other.”
But, Rep. Steve Stemler (D-Jeffersonville), the other Democratic committee chairman revealed that his discussions with Bosma were kept from Bauer. And Chet Dobis may be the best source for historical perspective.
“Everybody’s called for bi-partisanship over the years,” Dobis said on Tuesday. “Nobody’s really been sincere about it.”
Brian Bosma may be the first, but he has some convincing to do.
