The Chicago Bears are busy setting up interviews with different head coaching candidates this week, but it was a coach already on the team’s staff that got the first crack at the job.

That coach is defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who interviewed with the team on Wednesday, the Bears announced. Fangio, whose contract is expiring, has been the team’s defensive coordinator for the last three seasons and has helped to mold the team’s defense into one of the better groups in the NFL.

Even with injuries to players like Leonard Floyd and Jerrell Freeman, the Bears’ defense ranked as the 10th-best in the NFL this season, and Fangio has earned the respect of management and players with his gameplans and coaching style.

If Fangio doesn’t land the head coaching job, he should generate plenty of interest from other teams that are looking for new coordinators. The Green Bay Packers are one of those teams after firing Dom Capers, and Fangio has already been linked to that job by several reports.
