‘Fast Eddie’ Appeal Shot Down by Supreme Court

A former Chicago alderman who’s guilty in a real estate kickback scheme is due to be sentenced next week, after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his appeal without explanation Monday.Edward Vrdolyak , also known as “Fast Eddie,” pleaded guilty to one conspiracy count in 2008. Prosecutors say he arranged a $1.5 million kickback in exchange for setting up a real estate sale after he was out of office.

Last winter, Vrdolyak got what the government thought was a slap on the wrist: five years’ probation and a $50,000 fine.

But in a rare move, prosecutors appealed the sentence, and a higher court agreed with them, saying the original punishment was so light there was a chance Vrdolyak would repeat the crime.

His laywer then asked the Supreme Court to delay sentencing, based on a change in one of the laws that was used against him, but the justices refused.

Vrdolyak’s lawyer, Michael Monico, was not available to comment on the decision.

Vrdolyak’s sentencing is now set for Oct. 15.
