Fire destroys Westfield house

WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) – At least three families were displaced from their homes after a massive fire engulfed a home in the 500 block of Grabill Drive in Westfield late Wednesday night. The home where the fire began is being labeled a total loss.

Fire crews were called to the home just after 11 p.m.

The first responding companies found flames shooting from the garage and roofline of the home.  They quickly determined that the couple and two children living inside had gotten out safely.  The family smelled smoke and ran outside, alerting next door neighbors of the fire, officials told 24 Hour News 8 at the scene.

It took firefighters more than 30 minutes to get the fire under control, but heavy flames and smoke had already done significant damage.  The home is being labaled a total loss.  Fire also damaged a Toyota sedan in the home’s driveway, as well as both adjacent homes.

“The home to the north has significant damaged to the exterior, and possibly through to the garage area.  We’re still working to assess the full extent of that.  The home to the south has more minor smoke and fire damage to its exterior,” said Westfield Fire Chief Tood Burtron.

All three families are now believed to be staying with relatives, Burtron said.

Fire investigators were beginning to search for damage patterns early Thursday morning, but said it appeared at the outset that the fire started in the garage area.
