Flames tear through Boy Scout camp

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – Firefighters are working to put out hot spots after a fire destroyed a building at a Boy Scout camp in Lawrence Township Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out shortly before 6 a.m. in the cafeteria building at Camp Belzer located in the 6100 block of Boy Scout Road.

Motorists traveling along I-465 called 24-Hour News 8 to report seeing flames shooting above the trees.

Once firefighters arrived on the scene they had a difficult time battling the fire.

“No hydrants what so ever so it is making it very difficult,” said Lawrence Fire Chief David Carlson.

Several tankers from nearby fire departments were called in to help battle the fire.

Around 7:30 a.m. most of the flames were out.

Police have closed off Boy Scout Road between 56th and Shafter. Morning commuters will have to find an alternate route.
