Drivers of electric or hybrid cars may soon receive another benefit to owning these vehicles: free city stickers. One Chicago alderman wants to make it happen — and to bring in more revenue for the city in the process.
Alderman Joe Moreno would like to draw a greater distinction between the benefits of owning different types of vehicles. He believes offering free stickers to more environmentally friendly cars to be a solution.
To make up the lost income, Moreno intends to increase the sticker price for most other vehicles by $20, a proposal that could raise the city $21 million each year.
“I just think it’s fair that the hybrid vehicle, the small vehicle, pays less than they do today,” Moreno stated. “And the Hummer, the larger vehicles, the gas-guzzling ones that are harder on our streets, make the potholes, take up more room, pay more.”
Owners of old gas-guzzlers need not worry. Moreno says he would consider extending his plan to include measures that would temporarily protect them from the increased fees.
Moreno’s proposal will next go to a city council committee for consideration.
