Chicago – Maeve McNicholas died on July 29, 2004 as a result of a brain tumor that was diagnosed less than 36 hours before. She was only 26 months old.
Her parents, along with family and friends, established the Maeve McNicholas Memorial Foundation in 2005. It recently became an affiliated organization of Children’s Memorial Hospital.
Since 2006, Maeve’s Foundation has donated more than $170,000 to Children’s Memorial Hospital to support public awareness and research of childhood brain tumors.
The mission of Maeve’s Foundation is to assist/fund programs and hospitals to:
- Increase public awareness about the severity and prevalence of childhood brain tumors
- Aid in early detection of childhood brain tumors by increasing awareness of symptoms
- Help to find the cause and a cure for childhood brain tumors through the support of medical research
- Help support families with children living with brain tumors
In 2006, Fabricio Costa, Ph.D., became the first Maeve Foundation Scholar in Cancer Biology and Epigenomics. His research focuses on uncovering the molecular signatures of pediatric brain tumors to predict how they will respond to treatment.
On Saturday, you can help out by attending the foundation’s signature event, Play for Maeve. It’s a day of family fun and takes place in Beverly Park on the South Side of the Chicago.
