Homicide Fugitive Found In Mexico; Federal Authorities Extradite South-Side Man Wanted in a 2002 Murder Case

Chicago Police announced today the arrest of a south-side Chicago man for a homicide that occurred in the 4800 block of South Honore, on March 18, 2002.

ARMANDO CRUZ, age 35, from the south-side of Chicago, was arrested in Mexico, by a Joint Federal Task Force.

CRUZ was extradited to Chicago and turned over to Wentworth Detectives on Oct. 14, 2009.

CRUZ was charged in a Cook County criminal complaint with violation of several criminal statutes, including First Degree Murder and Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution. Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Gonzales approved charges on Oct. 15, 2009.

According to the complaint, CRUZ fatally stabbed his wife, Maria Ramirez-Cruz, age 33, on March 18, 2002 and then fled to Mexico to avoid arrest.

The arrest announced today is the result of a collaborative investigation by the Chicago Police Department, the FBI, and Mexican Authorities.

CRUZ is scheduled to appear in central bond court TODAY at 26TH and California.

The public is reminded that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
