Ka-Tet Theatre Company Presents “Road” by Jim Cartwright August 7-29 at Chicago’s Stage Left

Ka-Tet Theatre Company presents their first production Road, by Jim Cartwright, directed by Richard Stockton Rand – playing August 7-29, 2009 at Stage Left, 3408 N. Sheffield Ave.

1987. England is reeling from a recession. But for the inhabitants of a Lancashire street, there’s a party to go to.  Join the vagrant Scullery on a tour, from sitting rooms to bedrooms, from disco to pub, to witness a nocturnal slice of life in the lowest depths of the Thatcher era, ”where things slide to but don’t drop off.”

Written in 1986 against the political background of Thatcherism, Road explores social exclusion and the bleakness of a working class existence with biting, roguish humor. An ensemble cast of 12 rotate the 25 roles of the townspeople, with one character, Scullery, serving as the audiences drunken, foul-mouthed, but charming guide.

Ka-Tet Theatre Company produces ensemble driven theatre focusing on a strong collaboration and cohesion between actors, directors and designers. The name of the company, Ka-Tet, means a group of people brought together by ka, or fate, to achieve a common goal.

We believe that theatre is a collective experience, that theatre should be visceral; felt first and intellectualized later. We know that experience is only possible when there is an honest connective link, a symbiosis of audience and artist. We welcome each audience to bring their own unique collective experiences and energies to form, every performance, our Ka-Tet.
