Latest arrest for convicted child killer

CHICAGO (STMW) – A registered sex offender who served prison time for the 1992 shooting of a 9-year-old boy was ordered held on $350,000 bond Friday after being charged once again with theft and failure to register his address.

George Wyatt, 35, of the 6600 block of South Drexel Avenue in Chicago, is charged with theft and failure to report his current home address in a timely matter to the sex offender registry, a felony, according to a release from police.

Wyatt appeared for a bond hearing Friday and was ordered held on $350,000 bond, Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin said. He will appear for a preliminary hearing in Violence Court (Br. 66) on March 25.

Police said Wyatt was arrested about 9 a.m. Thursday.

He was spotted by police in an alley carrying two power hedge trimmers, the release said. Officers patrolling the 4800 block of North Central Avenue stopped him because of recent garage burglaries in the area.

When he couldn’t prove the power tools where his, officers ran a name check and found he was not living at the Northwest Side address he had provided for the sex offender registry.

In January 1993, Wyatt, then 17, pleaded guilty to the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Anthony Felton in the 500 block of West Oak Street. The boy was killed when he was caught in gang crossfire while standing in front of his home in the Cabrini-Green public housing complex on Oct. 13, 1992.
Wyatt was one of three teens charged with murder who received prison terms. He was sentenced to 32 years after pleading guilty to the murder.

Information regarding Wyatt’s sexual offense was not immediately available Friday afternoon.
