Lawmakers offer break to wrongly imprisoned

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — People sent to prison for crimes they didn’t commit have suffered plenty. Illinois lawmakers say they shouldn’t also have to pay taxes on whatever money they get as compensation.

Lawmakers have approved legislation that would lift the income tax on any state settlement to someone who was wrongly imprisoned.

The final step was a 101-10 vote in the House on Wednesday. The legislation now goes to the governor.

Illinois has seen many prisoners released after evidence surfaced that proved they were innocent. In some high-profile cases, the prisoners had been sentenced to die.

The legislation is SB3648.
