Man Charged for Intentional Car Crash

Geneva, Ill. – An 80-year-old west suburban man has been charged with intentionally crashing his SUV head-on into a car 10 days ago, leaving himself and one other person hospitalized.

About 6 p.m. on Aug. 8, Geneva Police and Fire Dept. personnel were dispatched to Route 38 and Maple Lane for a three-vehicle collision, a release from police said.

Investigators determined a Saturn Vue, driven by George H. Smith, 80, of St. Charles, collided head-on with a Volvo S70 sedan. Subsequently, a third vehicle, an Acura MDX SUV, was struck.

Smith was eastbound on State when he intentionally drove his SUV into the oncoming lane of traffic, resulting in the crash, according to a police report.

The 51-year-old driver of the Acura was uninjured, but the driver of the Volvo, a 46-year-old Geneva resident, had to be extricated from his car. He was taken by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, the release said. Geneva police did not have any information on his condition.

Smith was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva suffering multiple injuries, including broken vertebrae, broken legs, a shattered hip and head trauma which caused bleeding on the brain, the report said.

Police did not say why Smith intentionally drove into the Volvo. He was charged Monday with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, both Class 3 felonies, police said.

He was taken into police custody Monday and he is expected to appear for a bond hearing at the Kane County Courthouse in St. Charles on Tuesday, police said.
