Man Charged in Northwestern Sex Assault

Skokie, Ill. – Juan Jose Garcia, 41, has been charged with home invasion and sexual assault for the Sunday morning attack on a Northwestern University student in her Evanston apartment.

The assault happened between 6:10 and 7:10 a.m. on Sunday  when Garcia entered the second-floor apartment through a window.

Evanston police arrested Garcia later on Sunday during a search of the surrounding area.

This investigation also implicated Garcia in two additional cases, including a residential burglary and the impersonation of a police officer.

The additional cases involved Garcia representing himself as a police officer to CTA employees. The employees became suspicious and filed a police report on July 31. Detectives noting Garcia’s physical description conducted follow-up interviews with the CTA employees and Garcia was subsequently identified in that case.

And when Garcia was initially detained for the home invasion and sex offense investigation, officers discovered he was in possession of suspected stolen items linked to a residential burglary in Evanston.

Garcia has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, home invasion, false impersonation of a peace officer and residential burglary, all felonies, police said.

His next scheduled court date is Aug. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Skokie courthouse.
