Man charged with driving kids to park while drunk

ST. CHARLES, Ill. (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — A west suburban man was allegedly under the influence of prescription drugs and alcohol when he struck a tree and mailbox, then parked his SUV on a playground to let his three young children play in their pajamas Sunday.

Dirk William Hary, 40, of the 2500 block of King Richard Circle in St. Charles was charged with endangering the life of a child under the age of 18 and DUI-combined influence, and cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle,  improper lane usage and seatbelt usage, according to St. Charles police spokesman Paul McCurtain.

About 1 p.m. Sunday, Hary drove his Infiniti QX56 into a tree and mailbox, and then into Charlemagne Park at Indian Way and Oxbow Lane, McCurtain said. He drove across the grass and right up to a piece of playground equipment.

“He drove across onto the grass on purpose, drove through the playground and parked his vehicle,” McCurtain said. “He got out and his three kids got out to play in their pajamas.”

A field sobriety test was given when officers arrived. They were met by a witness, along with a West Chicago police officer because Hary allegedly struck a vehicle in West Chicago prior to arriving at the St. Charles park, McCurtain said.

He was placed under arrest after failing a field sobriety test.

The children — boys ages 1, 2 and 7 —were taken to the police station and picked up by their mother, who bailed her husband out, McCurtain said.

Hary has several pending DUI cases in St. Charles, McCurtain said.
