INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana State Department of Health says reigning Miss America Caressa Cameron will speak at the annual statewide HIV awareness program on Dec. 6.
The Virginia woman who was crowned Miss America in January has made AIDS awareness her top issue. She had an uncle who died of AIDS and her family fostered a young girl who lived with the disease. Congress recognized Cameron in 2007 for her work to bring instant-result HIV testing to her home state.
The Indiana awareness program will be held at the Madame Walker Theatre Center in downtown Indianapolis. A group of Kokomo High School students directly affected by HIV also is scheduled to speak at the program. It’s free and open to the public.
