Motorist charged for hitting man changing tire

CHICAGO (STMW)  — A woman has been charged after striking the van of a man changing a flat tire, injuring him, on the Northwest Tollway (I-90) Saturday morning.

The incident happened about 4:50 a.m. on the Northwest Tollway, near O’Hare International Airport, according to Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sgt. Tim Zych.

A man who was pulled over on the righthand shoulder of the tollway, was outside changing the right rear tire when an SUV veered onto the shoulder, Zych said. The SUV struck the van and pushed it into the man who was changing the tire, Zych said. The man was thrown into a ditch on the righthand side of the road from the impact.

The victim, a 48-year-old man, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet van, according to Illinois State Police Tollway District Master Sgt. Greg Minx.

Nadine Jimenez, 23, was driving a 2002 Jeep Liberty when she struck the van, according to Minx. She was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no proof of insurance.

The man was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, with non life-threatening injuries, Zych said.

The woman stopped after the accident, Zych said.
