CHICAGO, IL — For the first time in years, law students at the University of Illinois College of Law can take a course on the business behind the law and it will be more in depth than ever before.
Audrey H. Rubin, President of Rubin Solutions, Ltd., a provider of finance and operations consulting to professional services firms, has joined the faculty as an Adjunct Professor to teach the course on Law Practice Management.
“Profit margins are increasingly paper-thin for law firms. To minimize training costs, employers are searching for candidates who can hit the ground running, efficiently and effectively,” said Rubin. “Candidates who already know how to track their time, talk to clients and account for expenses are naturally going to have a competitive edge in this conservative economic climate. I commend the University of Illinois for recognizing how important business skills are to an attorney’s success in the field.”
Practical business skills are often overlooked in a law school setting, according to Rubin. She believes that law schools, the American Bar Association, and other organizations are increasingly realizing that new lawyers need to understand the financial and business realities of the law industry to thrive, especially during tough economic times.
Rubin’s course will focus on financial and personnel management, as well as project management and practical ethical concerns when operating as a lawyer.
