New Blog Tracks Spots Where People Fail To Clean Up After Dogs

CHICAGO (CBS) ― The new blog “South Poop” is tracking the spots where dog owners did not do what this person is doing.

Dog owners in the South Loop are using a new blog to take their neighbors to task for failing to pick up after their pooches.

The blog “South Poop” is dedicated to tracking the spots where people are leaving their pets’ waste behind, and finding out who the culprits are. They even include pictures of the unsightly evidence.

Dog owner and longtime South Loop resident Douglas Freymann is the man behind the blog. He told the Chicago Journal newspaper he started the Web site in January after becoming annoyed with the dog droppings he kept finding on the ground while taking his own dogs for a walk.

In a Feb. 19 entry, the blog listed the excuses that some area residents use for not picking up after their dogs – “it’s biodegradable;’ ‘it’s really small;’ ‘the rabbits and coyotes leave their poo, why can’t we?’ ‘ewww;’ ‘nobody will notice.’”

But, the bloggers wrote, “that’s not going to cut it in an urban environment,” and it gives people who object to neighborhood dog owners ammunition.

The blog is intended for responsible dog owners and does not accept “anti-dog/owner rants.” Comments are moderated to make sure things stay civil.

Failing to clean up dog droppings is forbidden by city ordinance. Under Chapter 7-12 of the Chicago Municipal Code, people who fail to clean up after their pets can be fined between $50 and $500.
