NILES (STMW) — A man shot his estranged wife in the face before turning the gun on himself Tuesday afternoon in the driveway of their north suburban home.
Niles police received a 911 call from a resident in the 8100 block of Prospect Court about 3:47 p.m. and found 46-year-old Gregory Vaughn dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in the street next to his estranged wife’s car, according to a police release.
Vaughn’s 46-year-old wife, Amy, was found in the driver’s seat of the car yelling for help, the release said. Suffering a gunshot wound to the face, she was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was listed in “stable” condition Wednesday morning.
She later told police she arrived home to pick up her kids for visitation. The couple is going through a divorce and she had been staying in Northbrook with a relative, the release said.
When she pulled up to the home, she lowered her window a few inches and saw Gregory Vaughn come out to the car. He raised a gun and fired at her, striking her in the left cheek, the release said.
Four shots were fired, including the one that killed Gregory Vaughn, the release said. Police recovered a semi-automatic .32 caliber pistol.
The couple’s 16- and 11-year-old daughters and 13-year-old son were inside the home at the time of the shooting. They are currently staying with a relative, the release said.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Wednesday.

I know the only son of the Father who was killed. It very tragic and I hope that the children can recover without hurting themselves.
