NRDC Wants Barriers Between Lake Michigan and Mississippi River

An environmental group is recommending the separation of Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River basin to fend off Asian Carp.

The National Resources Defense Council’s report says permanent barriers would also improve the city’s outdated water system.

Henry Henderson is with the NRDC.

HENDERSON: This is a highly engineered system that requires a highly engineered response. Not simply “oh lets just close some locks and it will work out fine” or “lets just drop a barrier in the middle of this.” This is basically a system that was built around management of waste water.

Henderson says the NRDC’s report is preliminary and doesn’t detail how much barriers could cost.

A federal judge in Chicago is currently considering whether to grant an injunction to close several locks that lead into Lake Michigan.
