Piniella says he’s retiring after Sunday’s game

CHICAGO – Lou Piniella says he’s retiring after the Chicago Cubs’ game against the Atlanta Braves so he can spend more time with his family.

The 66-year-old manager made the announcement in a release handed out by the team before Sunday’s game. Third base coach Mike Quade has been promoted to interim manager.

Piniella had said last month that he planned to retire at the end of the season. He missed four games this month to be with his ailing mother in Florida.

In 18 years in the majors as a player and another 22 as a manager, Piniella made five trips to the World Series and has three championship rings.
