CHICAGO (AP) — National Poison Prevention week starts Sunday and the American Academy of Pediatrics cites some startling statistics to kick it off.
Every year, more than 2 million people swallow or have contact with poisons. More than half are under age 6. And most poisonings occur when parents or caregivers are home but not paying attention. So the academy has some prevention tips:
- Store dangerous substances out of reach or locked up. That includes cleaning products, antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, pesticides and furniture polish.
- Call 911 if your child is unconscious, having seizures or trouble breathing.
- Try to remove swallowed poison but don’t induce vomiting and don’t use ipecac syrup.
- With skin contact, rinse the affected area with lukewarm water for at least 15 minutes.
- With fumes, take the child into fresh air immediately.
