A bag of 18 stolen packages were found over the weekend in Evanston and all of the intended recipients have been identified, police said.

Six thefts were reported last week, some from a high rise apartment on Chicago Avenue in the north suburb, police say. The uptick in package thefts is due to the impending holiday season, police said.

Last week Amazon announced a new service that it says could be a solution to thefts. Customers can allow a delivery person to enter their home to put a package inside. The service would cost a few hundred dollars for a security kit that includes a camera to watch the delivery person.

Police in Evanston did not feel strongly one way or the other on the service as a potential theft deterrent. Evanston police said a thief could still kick down a door if they knew items were just delivered.

“All of the owners have been identified and we are working on reuniting them with their property,” police tweeted Monday afternoon.
