Police Officer Shot at Thompson Center Has Died: Sources

An officer shot at the James R. Thompson Center Tuesday afternoon has died, sources tell NBC 5.

The incident was reported around 2 p.m., but little information on what happened was released.

Supt. Eddie Johnson is expected to address the media around 4 p.m.

CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said an officer assisting a tactical team was “shot by an assailant.” The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where their condition was not known.

Multiple sources say the officer shot is a high-ranking member of the police department.

Police said authorities were responding to the scene in the 100 block of West Randolph.

Reports from the scene indicate a heavy police presence in the area.

Sources said an armed assailant was arrested, but police could not immediately confirm that information.

A spokesperson from the Thompson Center said there was a discussion between two people before the shooting happened.

One witness said he saw two men arguing before he heard as many as five shots.
