Quinn, Brady Spar Over Inmate Release

Chicago – The controversial release of state prisoners is back in the limelight and Governor Quinn is firing back at his Republican challenger.

On Friday, a report was released that found numerous problems with the state’s program to reduce prison overcrowding and save money. The report found that the Illinois department of corrections allowed the early release of nearly 1,800 inmates .

Of the offenders, 28 percent were in prison for violent crimes or had a history of violence.

Republican Bill Brady and Governor Quinn are using the report and its fallout to score political points.

“I as governor would never put public at risk to save moneym” Brady said.

“When he comes around Chicago, you should ask him, ‘why haven’t you stood up to assault weapons manufacturers when it comes to protecting the public?’” Quinn said.

The early-release program was the brainchild of the governor’s corrections chief Michael Randle. Quinn said Randle is a nationally-recognized leader on prison issues who deserves a second chance.

Brady said if he is elected, he’ll immediately demand Randle’s resignation.
