CHICAGO (CHICAGOPRESSRELEASE.COM) — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley are praising the plan to consolidate United and Continental airlines and the companies’ plan to call Chicago home.
The two joined the airlines’ CEOs on Tuesday to boast about how the consolidated airline will be a major boost to Chicago’s business community.
The two airlines have announced plans to form the world’s biggest airline.
Officials couldn’t provide details on the number of jobs that might be cut or created. But they say the deal will make the new United Airlines a financial powerhouse that can be a platform for creating and sustaining jobs.
Continental CEO Jeffery Smisek says frontline jobs will be virtually unaffected because the two airlines have little route overlap.
Smisek also tried to reassure customers that creating a bigger airline won’t mean raising fares.
