Chicago – Gov. Pat Quinn asked Illinois schoolchildren Monday to make holiday cards for troops serving overseas.
Quinn launched the Illinois Heroes holiday card drive on Monday in Chicago. Quinn’s office says the governor will personally deliver the cards later this year to service members at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. It’s the sixth year that Quinn will visit Illinois soldiers and their families in Germany. The governor says the cards will let the soldiers know “we are all thinking of them and are grateful for their courage and sacrifice.”
Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs director Dan Grant also is encouraging Illinois residents to support homeless veterans over the holiday season. Quinn’s office says veterans make up nearly 10 percent of the state’s homeless population.
