Beer, Wine and Spirits Now Available in Lavazza Espression Café to Toast Chicago’s Best Views
Chicago’s highest café, the Lavazza ‘Espression’ Café at the John Hancock Observatory, announced several significant upgrades this week as part of the Observatory’s mission to become Chicago’s premier viewing attraction of choice.
The most anticipated of these upgrades is the Observatory’s new liquor license, giving locals and vacationers alike even more reason to visit, linger and take in the breath-taking sights of Chicago the Observatory offers.
“The new café marks the next step in enhancing the guest experience at the Observatory,” said Daniel Thomas, general manager, John Hancock Observatory.
“Espression combines the finest Italian food, beverages and desserts with the best views of Chicago to provide an experience like no other in the city.”
Featuring world-class Italian espresso, as well as a full-liquor bar and exclusive culinary specialties created by celebrity chefs, the Lavazza Espression Café at the John Hancock Observatory is the first of its kind for Lavazza in the United States, and is unlike anything else in the city of Chicago.
The new and improved café is part of a larger refurbishment, including state-of-the-art Behold™ telescope viewing towers (one of the most advanced viewing technologies in the world, and another first in North America), a multimedia Sky Tour in six languages, a dedicated concierge desk, and more.
Lavazza’s dedication to high-quality ingredients, commitment to providing Observatory guests with affordable and made-to-order menu items, as well as its focus on innovative, European-influenced style makes this café a truly unique experience for locals and vacationing visitors alike, says Justin Thomas, Director of Operations, Lavazza Premium Espresso.
“This is the embodiment of what Lavazza is all about,” Thomas said.
It also makes our “must see” list.

About Espression by Lavazza
The new café concept Espression — refers to espresso, the signature Lavazza product, and to the company’s tag line ‘Espress Yourself’ — was awarded the 2008 Grand Award for Restaurant Design at the A.R.E. Design Awards. The casually-elegant European-style coffee shops serve exceptional coffee beverages as well as a wide range of delicious, freshly prepared breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, pastries and gelato. Many of the breads, cookies and breakfast items are baked on‐site daily. The signature Éspesso™, the coffee you can eat, was named among Time Magazine’s best inventions of 2006. The décor is contemporary-chic and the walls have artwork from the annual Lavazza calendars.
