Anger over red-light cameras is spreading. Some Chicagoans took part in a national day of protest Sunday.
Dozens demonstrated at the intersection of Addison and Western.
Opponents say the traffic cameras do not improve safety and that cities install them to raise revenue.
“As you pull up to the intersection you have a choice, and it’s either to slam on the gas or slam on the brakes. After you get more than one ticket you choose to slam on the brakes and people get rear-ended,” said protestor Robert Garrett.
Five states have banned red-light cameras, and Illinois might be next.
Two bills concerning the cameras are currently under consideration in Springfield.

I have a suggestion to improve public safety and correct traffic flow.
We need to legislate that the enormous revenue from traffic light camera monitored intersections to be directed to supplement all traffic lights with displays to show how much time is left before traffics light change. It will stop the motorists’ stressful guessing the odds when the traffic light is about to change. It will give plenty of time to adjust speed and save gasoline. This should considerably decrease rear end car collisions related to abrupt stops and significantly improve traffic flow. It will show that government actually addresses issues with public safety versus improving cost efficiency to issue traffic tickets. Such displays are already installed all over the world even in the smallest villages. It is a shame we are behind and it is time to address this issue.
I don’t see what the problem with red light cameras are. If a driver isn’t speeding, they won’t have to slam on their brakes. That driver is obviously careless. When i approach an intersection and the light is yellow, I slow down, because I am a responsible driver. Red light cameras don’t make people reckless drivers. They were that way already and they blame the cameras for their bad driving. You can’t get a red light ticket if you stop behind the white line when the light is red. People should learn how to drive and stop speeding up when they approach a yellow light, just because they allegedly don’t want a red light ticket.
In 2005 i was hit from behind on 88 while stopped for an accident,it broke my neck and back have had 4 surgery’s,these red light cameras scare me worrying about being hit from behind again which would probably kill me.
Are these idiots more concerned with revenue or safety ?????,seeing the records in the papers that show they do cause more accidents.
Just another way of sucking money out of the average American,oh and by they way what about our opinion if we want the red light cameras installed or not or does it come don’t to some greedy jerk running the company coming in and bullshitting the people that we pay there salary????????
I will not or my family and friends vote for anyone that favors red light cameras.
