RIVERDALE, Ill. (STMW) — A south suburban Riverdale man died after a crash on Lake Shore Drive early Sunday on the Near South Side.
Police responded around 4:10 a.m. to a van that appeared to have struck a guard rail and then a wall in the 2200 block of South Lake Shore Drive, News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien said.
Charles Handcox Jr. was driving the full-sized 1994 Chevrolet van southbound when the van veered off to the right, striking the guard rail and then continued south, where it hit the wall, according to Central District police.
Handcox was not wearing a seatbelt and had to be extricated by Chicago Fire Department personnel. He was the only person in the van, which sustained front-end damage, police said.
Handcox, 37, of the 13800 block of S. Michigan Ave., was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 4:52 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
A Monday autopsy found he died of multiple injuries from an automobile accident and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation Monday by the police Major Accidents Investigation Unit.

Chuck was as big in loyalty, heart, personality, and talent as he was in physical form. He was a great communicator, on and off-stage, and a comforting presence. I felt safer when he was in the room. I knew he had my back, even if he was in the middle of a show. Chuck, I’ll miss you as long as I have the power of thought.

rip chuck desiel… he was my stepdad most known as my real father. i say he’s my real father because my father past in 1999 when i was about 4. since 2000 he has taking my mother and her 5 kids in. what man would take that responsibility. but when him and my mother started dating, he told her she would never have to work while she is with him. so when he past, our life has changed completely… me and my sisters my have to separate for a while, so my mother can get a job and enough money to afford a place where we can stay. but i know god is on our side… we are just waiting for his blessings… Charles handcox would always be missed.
